CHAMPAGNE AFTERNOON TEA AT COLONY – RITZ CARLTON, SINGAPORE

The concept of Colony alludes to the trade and commerce sea voyages of the British traders in the late eighteen century. Serving Singapore heritage cuisines in an elegant British-colonial decor.

On the walls, hangs replicate maps of olden east indie routes, and images of traders. Seats are furbished in tartan or cream leather. There is a mix of both urban and colonial style decoration. I like this newly revamped restaurant. Memories of previous Greenhouse will now be stored in a dusty corner and forgotten.

Letting your mood guide you to do what you want on the day. Today is one of those days. Weeks before, just the thought of planning for Christmas eve activity gave me a headache. The crowd, the exorbitant prices for food in every decent restaurant, shoppers doing last minute shopping everywhere, the traffic jam. Yah, I can’t handle these. Not in the mood to this year.

So, there’s no plans for Christmas eve. But I have the sudden urge to devour some Christmas goodies. Calling all hotels tea lounges for any vacant seats at the last minute is as impossible as nailing jello to a tree. Not surprisingly, The Chihuly Lounge at The Ritz Carlton has a closed waiting list. I was given the suggestion to try the new restaurant revamped from the previous Greenhouse, now called Colony.

You get to choose from 2 types of champagne afternoon tea set. Either the traditional British-style three-tier afternoon tea set with includes the signature French caviar pancakes, or buffet style from a selection at The Patisserie. Both includes a flute of Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial Champagne served from a magnum and a pot of Colony’s custom blend tea.

I managed to try both. I love the thick warm pancake accompanied with generous servings of french caviar, strips of hard boiled egg and sour cream.

When drowned together with a sip of the fabulous Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial Champagne, it’s the epitome of luxury.

The pancakes are only served with the three-tier tea set, which includes scones served with clotted cream and jam, finger sandwiches, mini cakes and macarons.

I love the custom blend tea using tea leaves from Tea Bone Zen Mind. I was secretly happy that Colony is not using tea from TWG.

Not that I have anything against them, but I personally prefer a stronger or more fragrant tea leaves. The tea comes with a choice of a personalised tea syrup enhancement with flavours such as pineapple, ginger, lavender, French rose, palm, cinnamon and panda.

Points for being innovative but I skipped the syrup. I never like my tea sweet. But I guess for the usual sweet tooth , these syrup will be the special highlight.

Choosing the buffet style afternoon tea and you need to empty your stomach to fill in all the pastries ranging from assorted finger sandwiches, puff pastries, pork floss breadsticks plus surprisingly tasty rojak sauce with fried dough. Since it’s Christmas, there’s Christmas fruit cake, stollen, bread pudding with vanilla custard, scones, strawberries, blueberries, nonya cakes, and multiple rows for different flavoured mini cakes and mousse cups.

If you stomach is still available after those items, there’s various flavours of chocolates blocks and pralines, plus ice cream such as mango sorbet, chocolate, strawberry, etc with toppings. Strangely, there are no macarons in the buffet selection, but what’s there to complain with already so much assortment of dessert selections?

Selecting the buffet, the bonus are the wider variety of food, the savoury items selection and the ice cream. Only missing is the caviar pancake and the macarons. If only both sets can be combine to include one caviar pancake per person and save the headache on which set to choose.
